High-fives all around to my fellow STEM ladies! Let’s face it, you’ve got the brains and the ambition to do whatever you want, the world is your oyster. But really, how many jobs in STEM fields can combine fascinating and fun? Unsurprisingly, there are tons! Here’s a few to get you started:
Flavorist
Have you ever wondered how candy and soda companies make their unique flavors? Flavorists are scientists with a degree in chemistry or biochemistry who create natural and artificial food flavors. Seriously though, I wonder if anyone’s told them that raspberries aren’t blue.
Mars Rover Driver
Dr. Vandi Verma Tompkins works for NASA doing arguably the coolest job on this planet, or any other. After she got her PhD in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University, Tompkins started researching at NASA and then became a driver for NASA’s Curiosity Rover. The Curiosity’s top speed is 0.09 MPH so it’s not exactly NASCAR, but it’s NASA-car, so who cares.
Pet Scientist
Some pet scientists analyze an animal’s DNA in order to solve human illnesses and disorders. Others, like animal psychologists, work with animals to learn how they behave and relate with people. These researchers, often with degrees in animal science, work to understand animals better, sometimes using their findings to understand people better.
Forensic Scientist
You know those super smart crime scene guys who always seem to be at odds with the cute detective in your favorite show? Forensic scientists collect evidence like fingerprints, weapons, and blood and analyze them to help criminal investigations. While in reality it’s not quite as thrilling as is looks on TV, forensic scientists play a huge roll in crime scene investigation. #therealMVPs
Disney Imagineer
Disney Imagineers come in all shapes and sizes. From engineers to architects to sound technicians to artists, it takes a team to create the magic of the Walt Disney theme parks and resorts. Imagineers combine science and art in order to bring the fantasy of Disney to life.
Audio Engineering
Audio engineers specialize in recording, sound mixing, and tons of other skills to make noises and music from JBieb’s new single to Chewbacca’s roar. Seriously, to get that special Wookie call, audio engineers combined recordings of bears, rabbits, tigers, camels, lions, walruses, and badgers. That’s dedication.
This list is just the tip of the iceberg, there are so many more interesting science, technology, engineering, and math jobs just waiting for a brilliant gal like you. Go get ’em tiger.
